New ETIAS Pre-Travel Requirements for Canadians visiting the European Union
Starting January 1, 2025, Canadians and other travelers from visa-exempt countries planning a European getaway will require ETIAS authorization before visiting the Schengen Area. The European Travel Information and Authorization System tracks visitors from countries who do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Zone. This system was proposed by the European Union to improve security and monitor the flow of travelers.
The Schengen Area in Europe includes Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
What You Need to Know:
How to Apply:Canadians will need to fill out an online ETIAS application. It’s straightforward and easy to follow —you’ll need to provide some personal details, passport info, your travel plans, and answer a few security questions.
The Cost:It’ll cost you around €7 or around $11 Cnd.
Processing Time:Most applications are approved in minutes. But if your application needs extra checks, it might take a bit longer.
How Long It Lasts:Once you’re approved, your ETIAS is good for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can travel to the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Background and Security Questions:Be ready to answer some questions about your criminal history, especially if there’s any record of serious crimes like terrorism, human trafficking, drug trafficking, or murder. There will also be checks on any prior security-related issues that might raise concerns. If you need a Pardon or Record Suspension for a past record, contact the Canadian Legal Resource Centre Inc.
What’s It For:ETIAS isn’t a visa—it’s more like a security check to make sure everything’s good before you travel.
So, while ETIAS adds a little extra planning to your European adventure, we’ve been told “it’s not a big deal”. You’ll still get to enjoy visa-free travel, just with a quick online pit stop first.
